Speaker Information:
Keynote speaker on July 30, 2024
Dr. Roy Magnuson is an Associate Professor of Music Theory and Composition in the School of Music at Illinois State University. His music has been performed throughout the United States and Europe and is recorded on Albany, NAXOS, and Tonsehen Records. Dr. Magnuson also researches virtual and augmented reality applications and is the creator of the virtual reality software solsticeVR, and the co-creator of the virtual reality conducting pedagogy RibbonsVR: Virtual Reality Assisted Conducting.
This year, Roy is serving as a Provost Fellow in the Office of Academic Affairs at ISU where his charge is to assist the University in its response to disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence and virtual, augmented, and mixed reality devices and spatial computing.
SIEC-ISBE is excited for Dr. Magnuson to speak with us about the various disruptive technologies. Due to the changing nature of disruptive technologies, a more complete description of his talk will be provided on the day of the keynote address.

Mr. Derek Story is the Director of HR Systems, Training and Communication at Illinois State University. During his time at ISU he has been responsible for continuity of HR technology, learning and development for campus, and staff recruiting and orientation. Prior to joining Illinois State University Derek had experience at the global staffing firm TEKSystems in the role of professional recruiter. He is a two-time Illinois State University alum, having received both his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from ISU, and teaches courses at both Illinois State University and Illinois Central College in message design, public speaking and business information systems. He is also a board member of the Bloomington/Normal Human Resources Council and active member of both the Higher Education User Group for Oracle technologies and the College and University Professionals Association.

Planned Company Visits
August 1, 2024
We will leave from the State Farm Hall of Business on a bus for a short 10-minute drive to the Rivian Automotive Facility located in Bloomington-Normal. The tour is expected to last approximately 60 minutes.
Rivian Automotive vehicles are made at their state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Normal, IL. You can get a glimpse of what to expect by watching a short video here. To learn more about Rivian Automotive, visit their website at rivian.com.
After the tour, we will return to the bus for the short drive back to Uptown Normal where you will have a photo opportunity at the Route 66 sign and a chance to visit the Foraging Forest. Lunch will be a picnic in the park to allow time to explore this beautiful area.
The afternoon tour will be of the historic Normal Theater. As part of the tour, we will have a discussion with city officials about the entrepreneurial spirit of the Town of Normal and how Normal is embracing sustainability. You can learn more about Normal at their website. The Normal Theater is adjacent the our conference hotel. After the tour, you will have the opportunity to explore Uptown Normal and prepare for the Gala Dinner.
