Responding to Learner Diversity: Differentiated Instruction in the Accounting Classroom
Elaine Cassar
Abstract:
Education is not a one-time event but a continuous process of teaching, learning and growth. Shaped by my own experiences as a student, my journey as a teacher has led me to explore more inclusive approaches to teaching. As a final-year Master's student in Teaching and Learning at the University of Malta, I present research that addresses one of today’s key educational challenges: responding effectively to the needs of diverse learners.
As classrooms become increasingly diverse, the need for flexible and inclusive teaching approaches is more important than ever. Building on Mizzi’s (2021) work on inclusive teaching strategies in informal education and Freire’s (2005) concept of inclusive pedagogy, in this presentation, I examine the role of differentiated instruction within accounting education, highlighting how DI can support a wider range of learners. As Tomlinson (2001) argues, students can no longer be treated as if they learn in the same way, reinforcing the need for responsive, inclusive teaching practices that can transform learning outcomes across diverse classrooms.
